Fort Collins 8th Grader wins “Doodle 4 Google” national art competition

Tessa Marquardt-Burrell, an 8th grader at T.R. Paul Academy in Fort Collins has been selected as one of 40 regional winners in the “Doodle 4 Google” national art competition, which had more than 33,000 entries from students in grades K-12.

Tessa and her family will be flown to New York City for the May 26 national awards ceremony at the Google New York center. All regional finalists will also have their doodle displayed in a public exhibit at the Smithsonian’s, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum for 6 weeks after the announcement event.

Google officials will visit the charter school academy and present the award at 9:00 AM on May 18 with a special presentation. The Academy (www.tpaak.org) is a tuition-free public school of choice with an arts-enriched curriculum using the Mosaica Education model.

“Everyone at Mosaica Education and the staff at the Academy are so very proud of Tessa and also want to recognize the outstanding instruction provided by art teacher, Dianne Rees,” said Terry Gogerty, Executive Vice-President of Mosaica Education. “Ms. Rees continues to develop the talent of  young students and as a result T.R. Paul Academy has won numerous local, state and national awards since its founding just four years ago.”

The regional finalists were selected by a panel of thirteen independent Expert Jurors that included representastives from organizations such as The Sesame Street WorkshopDr. Seuss EnterprisesCharles M. Schulz Creative Associates and Peanuts, and Pixar Animation Studios.

The art contest requires illustrating a unique art design depicting the word “Google” for the home page of the world’s largest search engine. The entries needed to be accompanied by related text with the theme of “If I could do anything I would …”.

At that ceremony, four national finalists will be selected; one per grade group of K-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. One of the four National Finalists will be awarded “National Winner of Doodle 4 Google” and the national winner’s doodle will ‘go live’ on the Google homepage for 24 hours.

The National Winner will win a $15,000 college scholarship to be used at the school of his/her choice, a laptop computer, a Wacom digital design tablet, and a t-shirt printed with his/her doodle on it. Google will also award the winner’s school a $25,000 technology grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab.

Tessa’s text accompanying the artwork, which shows ants working around a variety of fruits and vegetables, is called Ant Inspiration and states “Fruits and vegetables are vital to healthy maintenance of the human body. Storage and costs prevent distribution to underprivileged people. I would invent a system to gather and store healthy food for all the world’s population inspired by the way ants care for their colonies.”

Last year’s winner was featured on the Today Show and participated in other media events.
